For Cindy's birthday one year, we went into Chicago for a long weekend. The night of her birthday, we decided that we were going to party like rock stars. We went to Rick Bayless' Frontera Grill for dinner. Frontera Grill is connected to Bayless' upscale Topolobampo Mexican restaurant. Frontera is more casual and a lot more fun.
Frontera Grill doesn't take reservations, so on a Saturday night our wait was about two hours. But we didn't mind. We drank margeritas made from top shelf tequilla waiting for our table. When we finally got seated, we were feeling no pain and that's a good thing - the bar tab with tip was $60 bucks!
I ordered a carne asada dish that was basically a steak that had some spices to it. Cindy ordered one of the specials that night - a thin pork chop that was marinated in lime juice and green chiles for about 48 hours. It was - in a word - fan-friggin'-tastic! Oh man! It always seems like when Cindy and I go out for dinner to a new place and Cindy orders something different than what I order that her meal is always better. Not that my dinner sucked, it was very good, but Cindy's was unbelievably great.
Frontera Grill was great. Their menu changes all the time and they keep things new and fresh. I'm sure the next time we go in there will be a complete turnover of food on the menu.
