My wife is one of these creatures on Earth who has to have three meals a day. And when she needs food, she needs food. Me, as much as I like to eat, I can go hours without food.
When we would go to Milwaukee and stay with my cousin, John, for Summerfest, Cindy would always have to get breakfast before we'd go down to the Summerfest grounds for the day. On the advice of John one day, he steered us to Johnny V's Classic Cafe in West Allis just south of the Wisconsin State Fair Park (see map).
Johnny V's is truly a classic cafe, set up like a 50's style diner with a ton of Coca-Cola memorabilia throughout the restaurant.
Owned by Johnny Vassallo, Sr., the Classic Cafe opened in 1992. His son, Johnny, Jr., a bar owner and restauranteur in the Milwaukee area, became involved in 1993. Johnny, Sr. and his son, Jamie, bought Johnny, Jr. out in 1996.
Johnny V's is open 24 hours, 365 days a year, and they get a big after hours bar crowd. And the food is very good for a diner. Breakfast is served at any time and they have a number of good sandwiches and blue plate specials.
My favorite breakfast at Johnny V's is the eggs with gyro meat. Two eggs, hash browns, toast and a pile of gyro meat. It's scrumptious. They also make a great hot beef sandwich, too.
Johnny's is comfort food at its highest form. My cousin moved away a couple years ago, but I hit Johnny's every so often when I'm in Milwaukee for business. The decor is secondary to the food, and the decor is something else.
