One of my more favorite places to have a beer in the St. Louis area is Growlers Pub. Styled after English pubs, Growlers offers a quaint atmosphere for food and good beer.
Started in 1996 in Creve Coeur (see map), Growlers prides itself on a place where people can go to for good food (consisting of standard pub fare), a great beer selection (over 30 different beers on tap and nearly 100 more in bottles), and a place for good conversation. There's no blaring music and little live entertainment that can distract from having a good ol' conversation with friends.
Growler's Pub has two locations in the greater St. Louis area, the second one in Sunset Hills. They used to have three, but the one out in St. Charles County closed in early 2005. The one in Sunset Hills is a little bigger than the original one in Creve Coeur and offers a nice beer garden that seats up to 200 people.
Like I said, the food is good - primarily appetizers, burgers and sandwiches. However, they also do steaks, seafood and some pasta. They have a very extensive sandwich menu. Their reuben is very good and I have tried their muffaletta, which is OK, at best. But their burgers are good - I've had the swiss, mushroom and bacon burger a couple of times. And while it might not be in my all-time Top 10 favorite burger places, it's still very good.
Growlers is a good place to go for beer and a sandwich. But take along a friend as it's a great place for conversation, as well.
