Every once in a while you find a great place and you have to keep going back - no matter how far it is out of your way. I found such a place called Chances 'R' in York, NE (see map).
Bill Nemecheck from Hawkeye Audio in Coralville, IA turned me on to this place a number of years ago. He said he found it when they were on their way to Colorado and stopped off of Interstate 80 to get gas and something to eat in York. He told me, "If you like steak, you'll love this place."
Chances 'R' has been in business since the early 60's serving corn fed beef, seafood, chicken and great salads to thousands of people over the years. It's famous for the Prime Rib buffet on Friday night's, for their brunch on Sunday's and their party room has been used for countless receptions, birthday's and celebrations.
I've been to Chances 'R' about four or five times over the years. The last time I was in Lincoln, NE, I decided to drive the 45 minutes out to York and have dinner. It was well worth the trip.
The dining room is rather ornate, full of dark walnut paneling and stained glass. It's cozy and comfortable. However, I prefer to eat in the old English style pub they have just off the main dining area. The bartenders are professional and dressed nicely - they're better than some larger city steakhouses I've been to.
I've had their KC strip steak before, but this time I went with the prime rib. Perfectly cooked to a medium rare and swimming in its juices, it was one of the best prime ribs I've had. I had a side of their potatoes au gratin and a salad where they bring out a relish tray and a serving of each of their five homemade dressings. Their creamy garlic is very good and very strong!
Chances 'R' is one of those great little steakhouses in a small town that I just strive to find. It's worth the time to stop in if you're driving by York.
