Solly's (see map) is in Glendale, WI, just north of Milwaukee, situated next to I-43 and just south of the Milwaukee River. The Hilton hotel that I stay at in north Milwaukee is walking distance to Solly's just down Port Washington Road. It looks more like a house than a restaurant. And that's just part of their charm.
Solly's claim to fame is that they're the supposed originators of the "Butter Burger" - a burger cooked on a flat grille in butter. Doing that gives the burger a unique taste - one that actually is pretty pleasing. They're big and juicy and the cheese drips off the burger. It's a five napkin burger, to say the least.
Now, do NOT confuse Solly's butter burgers with the (and I use the term loosely) butter burgers from Culver's - a midwest chain that is growing by leaps and bounds and I don't know why, because their burgers SUCK! My wife loves Culver's, I can't stand them. I'll elaborate on my distaste for everything Culver's at a later time.
Even though I normally don't get fries when I eat a burger, I did try the ones at Solly's once and they're very good. A good portion of fries, at that.
Solly's is always busy during the noon hour and it's not a big place. They don't take credit cards. But they make a tasty burger.
