Cindy and I went down to the annual membership drive kick-off event at the River Music Experience in downtown Davenport tonight. We signed up for memberships to the R.M.E. - something that I really had been meaning to do, but never got around to it.
The door prize were two free tickets to the B.B. King concert coming up December 16 at the River Center in downtown Davenport. Now, I've seen B.B. King three times in my life. Yeah, the first couple of times it was great to see a living legend. The third time I saw him, it was like, "Oh, yeah. B.B. King. Been there, done that."
Actually, the first time I saw B.B. King was here in Davenport in the early 80's at the Col Ballroom just west of downtown Davenport. The Col used to host a number of rock and musical acts that would come through the Quad's long before The Mark of the Quad Cities was built in Moline. And they it still hosts a number of medium nationally known acts from time to time.
I came over with a co-worker friend of mine, Kurt Nyffeller, and a couple three buddies of his that he played with in a band in Iowa City. The wait between the warm-up band and B.B. King seemed to be unusually long and one of the guys, Kevin Murphy, said out of the blue, "Where be B.B.?" We were drunk enough that we all thought it was pretty funny and we began to chant, "Where be B.B.? Where be B.B.?"
Can't beat sophomoric fun when you're drinking. In fact, I still chuckle about that - "Where be B.B.?"
Once again, I digress from the matter at hand...
We were only down to the R.M.E. for about an hour this evening and as we were leaving, Kristy Adams saw us and said, "What if you guys win the tickets?"
I said, "Give 'em to someone else."
Cindy said, "Hold it! I'LL take the tickets if we win."
I'm sitting at home watching TV around 9:30 this evening and Kristy's husband, Randy, calls me up. He said, "Guess what."
I said, "It's snowing?"
He said, "No more than that."
I said, "What?"
Randy said, "You won."
We won the friggin' tickets to go see B.B. King. Except I really don't want to go. So Cindy said that she'd take the tickets and go with someone. I said, "Hold it. Isn't the 16th the day you and (her sister) Anita are going to Chicago for the day?"
Cindy stopped for a second and thought. She finally said, "Well, yeah. But Anita and I can still go."
I said, "It starts at 7:30. You guys are not going to be back for the show if you're going to Chicago, for God's sake, Cindy."
She kind of got that look of "Yeah, you're right" on her face.
So now I don't know what to do. You should never look a gift horse in the mouth, but I'm sorry - I'm just not fired up to see B.B. King all that much.
But, I'm sure I'll probably end up going...
