Cindy and I were in Chicago for the past couple three days and we tried to get into The Berghoff on Tuesday afternoon for lunch after spending about 3 1/2 hours going through the museum at the Art Institute of Chicago. The only problem was - well, the line was snaked clear out the door (the longest I'd ever seen it), and it was about 2:30 and when Cindy says she needs food, she needs food. We ended up going someplace else.
Tonight on our way home from Chicago, we were listening to the news on WGN radio and they announced that the Berghoff would be closing on February 28, 2006. We were both in shock. It turns out that Herman Berghoff, the grandson of the founder of the Berghoff, Herman Joseph Berghoff, is going to close the place up as his children - involved in a catering business - don't want to take it over. Berghoff, 70, will continue to own the building and lease it to his children running the catering business.
I'm bummed! We didn't get a chance to eat at The Berghoff when we were in Chicago, and now we hear it's closing! We've already said that we're going to go in to Chicago sometime here very soon and have one last dinner at The Berghoff. I'm really sorry to hear of it's demise.
I guess I'll have to change my review from a few days ago from "Restaurants" to "Rest in Peace" sometime in March...
