Grunty's Orange Drop Cookies
These were a staple in the Veber family growing up. This is my mother's recipe - the grandkids called her "Grunty", which I always thought was sort of funny. These are sinfully great and can be frozen for up to three months. First measurement listed is for smaller batches - second measurement for larger batches.
¾-1 ½ cups Crisco
¼ - ½ cup butter
1 ½ - 3 cups Brown Sugar
2 – 4 beaten eggs
¼ - ½ cup Orange Juice
1 – 2 tablespoons grated orange zest
1 – 2 teaspoons vanilla
1 – 2 cups sour milk (vinegar and milk)
3 ½ - 7 cups sifted flour
¼ - ½ teaspoons salt (optional)
2 – 4 teaspoons baking powder
1 – 2 teaspoons baking soda
Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs, orange juice, orange zest, vanilla and sour milk. Mix well. Add sifted dry ingredients. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Drop mixture from spoon onto greased cookie sheet. Bake in oven for 5 to 8 minutes.
Orange Drop Frosting
4 cups powered sugar
¼ teaspoons salt (optional)
