King's was a chain of restaurants based out of Nebraska. Growing up, we had one in Newton at the shopping center on the east side of town. The premise of the place was that you went in, sat in these booths, and they had the menu posted next to a telephone. When you knew what you wanted, you'd "call" your order in to a switchboard located in the kitchen area.
The food was pretty good. In fact, I loved their cheese burgers. They had a black peppery taste to 'em. I tell people that my affinity for all things seasoned with cracked black pepper has to do with the taste of the King's burgers from years ago. The closest I've found to the original King's burgers are the ones at Don & Millie's in the Omaha area (click here to read about Don & Millie's), and at The Woodhouse in Bismarck, ND (click here to read about The Woodhouse). Both restaurants
However, King's had this thing called a "Cheese Frenchee". I never cared for the thing, but some people absolutely craved it. My buddy, Dave Haack, who grew up in Nebraska, had the recipe and he gave it to me one time years ago. Here it is for you King's Cheese Frenchee addicts:
King's Cheese Frenchee Recipe
6 slices white bread
6 slices American Cheese (American Cheese is a must!)
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
3/4 cup flour
1 tsp. salt
Kellogg's Corn Flake Crumbs
Mayonnaise
Vegetable Oil for deep frying
Make 3 sandwiches using 2 slices of American Cheese per sandwich. Spread mayonnaise on bread slices. Cut sandwiches diagonally into triangles.
Combine egg, milk, flour and salt. Dip the sandwich triangles into the mixture and then coat with corn flake crumbs.
Deep fry until golden brown.
Ooo - my arteries are hardening just thinking about these!
I have tried and tried to duplicate that peppery flavor. Any ideas?THE HAMBURGERS WEREN'T SPICY hot but they had a wonderful peppery flavor.

Maybe add Worcestershire sauce to the burger mix.
