Two Mits in Elkader, Iowa (see map) is sort of hard to describe. First of all, they aren't in a building - it's more of a trailer on a street corner in downtown Elkader (it's not hard to find - Elkader is not that big). Secondly, it's only open on Thursday and Friday nights, and all day Saturday and Sunday from April thru October. Third, they have a grille that has inch high sides on it. That's so they can take a concoction of water and spices (they call it "dirty water") and pour it directly onto the grille.
When the water starts to boil, he throws down a bunch of raw onion rings. Then they put down hamburger patty after hamburger patty on the grille with the onions, right in the water. The burgers "boil" for about six to eight minutes, turning once. The result is a taste that you cannot believe. The burgers are so moist, so juicy, that you need six napkins per burger. The burgers are not very big - two make a nice meal.
You order them "Mit" (with) or without cheese. So "2 Mit" means "Two with cheese". They also have great hot dogs there. Don't know where they get their hot dogs, but I tried one once and it was out of this world. One of the best hot dogs I'd ever had.
Here's a hint - go on a sunny day and go across the street to the convenience store and grab a couple beers. There's a park about a block and a half away that overlooks a waterfall on the Turkey River. Grab a table, open the beer, have a Two Mit burger. You'll think you're in heaven, but it's really Iowa.
