I was first exposed to Dorothy Lynch salad dressing by an old college buddy, Kurt Nyffeler, who grew up in Columbus, NE - the home of Tasty Toppings, the manufacturer of Dorothy Lynch dressings.
Actually, there was a Dorothy Lynch and she first made her homemade dressing at the restaurant she and her husband ran in St. Paul, NE. After a time, the demand was so great for Lynch's dressing that people were coming in with glass jars and containers to take home. She ended up selling the recipe and the rights to manufacture the dressing to Tasty Toppings in 1964.
Dorothy Lynch salad dressing is a tomato base with an ample amount of sugar and vinegar. There's other seasonings in there - mustard, garlic, celery seeds. In fact, my friend Kurt could make the stuff. He said that his parents knew someone who worked for Tasty Toppings who gave them the basic recipe for Dorothy Lynch. His homemade Dorothy Lynch dressing was actually the first time I tasted Dorothy Lynch dressing.
Dorothy Lynch is available in nearly every state west of the Mississippi and can be found in the Midwest at Hy-Vee stores and most Wal-Mart Super Centers. Or if you'd like to get some directly from Dorothy Lynch you can click here.
It's good stuff to put on a salad. We don't have it around here as much as we should because I'd probably eat more salad if we did.
