Sometimes the only smell worse than smoke is the cleaning agents they use to get rid of the smoke odor. I'm concerned about the trend of major hotels toward completely eliminating smoking in guest rooms. A certain percentage of people are simply going to smoke in their hotel rooms even if they aren't supposed to. At least now they have their own designated rooms. If hotels make all rooms non-smoking then smokers will be scattered randomly throughout the hotels and just about every room will eventually smell like either smoke or cleaning agents.

I stayed in a Hilton last week where they had two little placards in the room - one in the bathroom and the other on the work desk. The placards said there would be a $150 charge if the hotel detected that the occupants smoked in the room during their stay.

Now, I don't know if that would cause some people to just forego smoking in the room or not. But if I was going to get charged $150 bucks above and beyond the price of a $149 a night room, I'd think twice.
