Bobak's is an interesting place - it's the size of most Midwestern supermarkets, but it is more of a Polish grocery store than anything else. They have all types of Polish food and meats. They make their own Polish sausages and deli meats in their meat shops.
Bobak's started in 1967 as a butcher shop operation. They've grown over the years to have three large full service stores (a fourth was to open in south suburban Orland Park in the fall of 2006) with a huge meat and deli counter filled with all different types of Polish meats. In fact, they make over 100 different types of Polish sausages and deli meats.
But they also have regular meat counter items such as steaks, chops and ground beef. And they also make their own soups (including an interesting sauerkraut and pork chop soup), sauerkraut and Polish cabbage rolls. Their bakery is great, too. Lots of Polish breads and desserts, in addition to other ethnic fare, as well.
Bobak's also has restaurants in two of their grocery stores (I've only been to two of the three, so it could be that the Burr Ridge location has a restaurant, too). They bill themselves as "European Style Buffets". You can sit down in the restaurants, or take items from the buffet home to serve there. They make everything right there at the restaurant/store. It's a great concept.
Bobak's are mainly on the southwest and south side of Chicago. It's really worth the visit, even if you aren't planning on picking anything up. But do like I do - always take a cooler because you never know what you may find.
