About a month ago, I wrote that our weather was just beautiful and spring was coming early. Temperatures were any where from the mid 60's to the lower 80's for about three weeks. Leaves were starting to come out, flowers were beginning to bud. We were seeing growth on the many rose bushes we have around our place. And thanks to a lot of rain in March, the grass in our yard was greener and more thick than at any time since we've lived here.
Then a cold snap hit about 9 days ago and temperatures have struggled to break out of the 30's and 40's for day time highs and nighttime temps have routinely been in the 20's. And yesterday, it snowed across the state of Iowa dumping over 6 inches of snow and creating havoc for thousands.
History shows there is always one big spring snowfall in late March or early April in Iowa before it's all over until later in the year. We were lucky here - we only got a dusting over night (right). But it was still a reminder that the weather can change pretty quickly in Iowa.
For all the initial growth that has happened on the plants, it's now virtually stopped. The small leaves on the rose bushes have whithered, the tulips and irises in our gardens won't be coming up this year, and the flowering trees and bushes have stopped in mid-bud.
With all this crazy weather happening, I was reminded this morning that tomorrow marks the one year anniversary of the Iowa City tornado. On April 13, 2006, a massive tornado skipped across Iowa City resulting in millions of dollars in damage to buildings and landmarks. Most of damaged area in Iowa City is rebuilt, but the trees still show the scars of the tornado.
The good news is that the sun is supposed to come out tomorrow and the snow will be long gone with temperatures into the 40's. And it's supposed to get back into the 60's next week and everything should return to normal.
