I've been meaning to write about the Hampton Inn in West Des Moines for quite sometime. I have a number of choices for hotels in the Des Moines area, but my first choice is always the Hampton Inn just off Interstate 80 at Jordan Creek Parkway (see map).
Probably one of the reasons I've been holding off in writing about the hotel is that it's so popular with business travelers that it can be incredibly tough to get into. Reservations, sometimes, need to be made more than 10 to 14 days out. I can't tell you how many times I've decided that I need to spend a night in Des Moines and tried to make reservations even a week out and haven't been able to get in.
One of the big reasons it's tough to get into is that there are a number of corporate offices in the area, plus the big Jordan Creek Town Center mall and shops are about two miles away to the south. But the other reason is that it's one of the nicer Hampton Inns I've ever stayed in.
A number of Hampton Inns have been going to this "art-deco" decor in their rooms featuring furniture and lamps with a 40's and 50's theme to them. The West Des Moines Hampton Inn was one of the first Hampton Inn's to have the art-deco style of furnishings in their rooms when they first opened in 2003. It doesn't seem like a Hampton Inn, but it still has all the amenities you expect from a Hampton.
Over the past year and a half, I've noticed that a lot of hotels have raised their room prices, some as much as 20%. The Hampton Inn in West Des Moines is no exception. Room rates average around $119 a night for a king-sized bed study room which is a little larger than the regular room for the same price. AAA rates can give you a little bit of a discount when AAA rooms are available. Hampton Inn's complementary breakfasts are included in the price.
About the only problem I have with this Hampton Inn is that there aren't many restaurants in the immediate area. It's definitely a five minute drive, minimum, to find anything good that isn't a chain or a fast food place. But for as comfortable the rooms and beds are at the Hampton Inn, it's a bit of a sacrifice that I can put up.
So, if you're looking for a hotel room in the Des Moines area, try to get into the Hampton Inn in West Des Moines. But please don't tell other people...
