Our good friends and ex-neighbors, Molly and Eric Page, are going to have their first child in late July. We've been kidding with them because their dog, Ralph (left), is like their kid right now. I've been saying that Ralph will end up taking dumps in the middle of the floor just to get attention when the baby comes. Eric says Ralph does that now when he doesn't think he's getting enough love.
On Monday, I got a text message from Eric that said, "It's a girl! Savannah Marie Page!"
Fully knowing that Molly wasn't due until the summer, I sent a text massage back, "Wow! Already? That has to be the quickest gestation period in human history!"
He sent a text back, "No, you idiot. We had an ultra-sound today."
Naturally, they're excited and thrilled, and we are, as well, for them. Eric's going to make a good dad as he's a lot like me - he's going to grow older, but he'll never grow up. And Molly and Cindy are so much alike because they have to put up with, and rein in, the guys who are seemingly regressing in mental years as they grow older.
Eric is a sportswriter and columnist for the Quad City Times. Last month, he won the prestigious "Young Journalist of the Year" Award at the Iowa Newspaper Association's convention in Des Moines. Here's a picture of Eric with two other award winners. He's the one on the left.
Earlier today, Cindy woke me up and said, "Good God, you have to read Page's column in the paper this morning." After I got up and sat down at the breakfast table, she handed me the sports page with Eric's column. It was laugh out loud funny because he was basically going through all the dreams and emotions of a sports nut father who was secretly hoping his first born would be a son. I told him this morning, "Well, you're going to have to come up with a new found appreciation for watching women's sports."
Here's the scan of Molly and Eric's daughter that accompanied Eric's column in the Quad City Times this morning with the caption, "Savannah Marie Page, early front runner for 2027 Quad Cities Times metro girls basketball player of the year." Click here to read the column.
