I'm starting my vacation today. And I'm probably going to do a lot of what I did on vacation last year - sleep in late, sit on the deck, read a lot, drink a few beers, and just hang at home. With the high cost of gas, it's going to be a lot of out of pocket money just to get to somewhere. Plus, we couldn't A) agree on what we wanted to do and where we wanted to go; and B) other things that are occurring during the vacation period made it difficult to be able to take a full week or two to go somewhere.
We've never gone to Chicago for a few days in the summertime and we may still do that. But if people aren't traveling as much this year because of high fuel prices, they are sure fooling the hotels in downtown Chicago. I can't believe how expensive some of the rooms in downtown Chicago are this summer. Rooms that we've gotten for $109 to $129 in the winter are $249 to $299 this summer. Maybe we'll stay out in suburbs, but even some of those room prices are higher than usual.
We talked about going to Savannah, GA, but Cindy didn't want to go when it's hot. She wants to go in October, but I can't take vacation in October due to the fact that's my busy time of year. She may still go in October with her sister.
I looked into getting a condo for a week in Lake City, MN on the shores of Lake Pepin, which is fed by the Mississippi . But the cheapest I could find was something like $1300 bucks. Sure, we could do our meals in the condo, but what kind of fun would that be on vacation?
I looked into going to New Orleans, Cindy wanted to go to the Bahamas. But we have a planned outing with Cindy's company at the Iowa State Fair and Cindy wanted to be there for that, so we couldn't plan anything for more than being gone four or five days. And the following weekend is the annual River Roots Live that I'll be working again, so I'm tied up for three days at the end of my vacation. Then it's the last week in August, one that I have to be in the office for. Then I'm off to Denver for the annual CEDIA Expo.
Where did the summer go?
Actually, I'd rather just hang around home on vacation anyhow. Sleep in late, read on the deck, take a nap in the afternoon, have a few beers, grill out at night. But Cindy's been going bonkers and she wants to go somewhere. I don't blame her. She works pretty hard and she does have a point that she'd like to get away for a few days. Me - I'm on the road so much, staying home is a luxury.
We'll figure something out in the coming days. But in the meantime, is 10 a.m. too early to pop a cold beer?
Absolutely not. DO IT !!!!
