As I write this morning, it's -23 (F) here in the Quad Cities. That's -31 (C) for my friends in Canada and Europe. It's just colder than hell out. Well, that is, if hell is cold. -23 is five degrees warmer than the all-time low of -28 set back in January of 1996. I remember that rather vividly. I was traveling that week with a guy from Marantz and it was the most miserable week I think I ever spent in my life. Temperatures didn't get above ZERO for four or five days. This time around, temps are supposed to stay below zero for about 42 hours straight - that's still too many hours for me. After my bitch fest yesterday about Las Vegas, one thing you have to say about the town is that the weather sure is nice there. Other than the very rare snow event that hit the city in December, Las Vegas enjoys abundant sunshine and warm to very warm temperatures year round. While it's easy to spot the tourists vs. the residents in 60 degree weather (the tourists are the ones without the winter parkas), Las Vegas certainly isn't shivering like we're shivering this morning. My biggest fear is not if my car will start or if our pipes will burst - it's about the beer supply I have out in the garage. History tells me to cut down dramatically on the beer stockpiles in the winter time, just for situations like this. But it was 20 degrees in the beer fridge yesterday and I'm afraid I'll go out this morning and see broken bottles and iced-beer on the shelves. There's not a lot of beer in there and the rest of the beer that I have on shelves is hunkered down under heavy-matted blankets. I think they'll be OK. Geez, while I've written this entry, the temperature at the National Weather Service at the Davenport Airport just dropped to -25 (F) (-32 C). That's now only 3 degrees warmer than the all-time low. Well, I guess the best thing about today marks the half-way point of the Meteorological Winter. If the second half of Winter is anything like the first half, it may be time to check housing options further south. Naw - I love it in Iowa. Like I say, nine months out of the year, this is a great place to live. I can handle the cold weather. For awhile...
