Thanks for the history. Used to lunch there in the early 70's when I had summer jobs on the railroad.

Have been splitting my Maid-Rites between Newton and Marshalltown for the last 7 years. Taylor's win. Hands down. They didn't 7 years ago, but they do now. Great article, Will!

This is an excellent write up on what was a ritual for my family when we'd go into Marshalltown when I was a little girl growing up. The first thing I do when I go back to Iowa to see family is head to Taylor's. IT's a shame that the state of Iowa has to come in and try to screw up a good thing.

I agree that since no one has ever gotten sick from eating the traditionally cooked maid-rite why oh why must the Iowa state government force changes to a traditional eating establishment just because they can. Iowa government used to be so much more conservative and the things they tried to change actually needed to be changed.

I and my family go back to the late 20's when Taylor's was first opened. I even had to move from California to Marshalltown to get my Maid-Rite experience, when I started work for Fisher Controls.

Only wished I could get back to Marshalltown before we lose the best Maid-Rite ever.
